History

Bagad Moulin Vert in 1969

Located on Brittany's far western tip, the city of «Quimper» is the capital of the «Cornouaille» region. One of the city's neighborhoods, «Moulin Vert» (Green Mill), takes its name from the water mills that once lined the «Steir» River. They were used to grind color pigments for dyes and earthenware factories.

During the St. Jean celebration in 1951, Jos Cadiou, Léon Goraguer (former mayor of Quimper) and Pierre Pulvé came up with the idea to create a «bagad» for children at the Moulin Vert school (a bagad is a traditional Breton band composed of bagpipes, «bombardes» and drums). This was one of the first bagad schools in Brittany, and for its first five years, it welcomed boys, the oldest of which were barely 12 years old. Girls later joined the ranks, and they too donned the famous blue «kabig» (hooded coat) and beret topped with green pompon. Considering the trends of the day and the teachers' dedication, the bagad soon became well-known for its discipline, its performances during parades, and the youthfulness of its members (there were 60 in 1971) !

In the early 1980's, Pierre Pulvé handed the reins over to Yves Salvy. This marked a turning point for the bagad, as Salvy developed training within the group, assisted by classes given by «BAS 29» professors (Association of Pipe Players of «Finistère»). They gave classes on techniques for Scottish bagpipes and drums, as well as musical quality improvement, which resulted in more experienced players. The «Bagad ar Meilhoù Glaz (Moulin Vert - Quimper)» thus became a bagad for young adults and adolescents. In 1982, it participated for the first time in the National Bagad Championships in «Fouesnant», as a 4th category group.

The bagad has been moving up the ladder ever since: 3rd category in 1983, 2nd in 1989, and 1st category in 1995 ! With ninety members strong, in 1995 the bagad created its «bagadig», a training school for young players. Today, the bagad is a member of the select club of the 12 best of Brittany, and for this reason, members must give their all at regional, national and international festivals.
