Training

Ever since it was created, the bagad provides training for young players. Since 1995, it has been perfected with the creation of the bagadig (bagad for youth). Youngsters learn musical notation and receive practical instrumental training alongside BAS 29 professors and other confirmed musicians in the bagad.

Cornemuse (Bagpipes)

Length of training: 2-4 years
At first, musical notation and instrument techniques are studied. Since the ornaments of the Scottish bagpipes are so complex, a study instrument known as the «practice» is used in training. Once basic notions are learned, the students play on the pipes themselves, and learn to develop and manage their breathing. Breton and Scottish musical airs serve as a basis for practicing and exercises.

Bombarde

Length of training: 2-3 years
Musical notation and the tablature of the instrument are first learned on the Irish flute. Students move quickly on to the bombarde, a double-reeded instrument which demands a rather strong musical mastery. The bombarde is typically Breton, and is inspired by the rich repertoire of airs in Brittany. Its wide range allows players to interpret sacred, medieval, and even jazz music.

Drums

The drum section of a bagad comprises Scottish snares, a bass drum, toms and various other percussion instruments.

Snares

Length of training: 4-5 years
The first stage of training includes the study of rhythmic musical notation and «wrist forming» of young drummers. Further training is based on the complex techniques of the instrument. Once the technique is mastered, the study of Scottish and Breton partitions helps improve the dexterity and ease with which the drummers must play.

Percussions

Aside from the study of rhythmic notation and striking technique, bagads do not really give percussion courses. Percussionists are trained within the group, and they must posses an innate sense of rhythm, dexterity, as well as a large dose of creativity.
